Pneumatic Probing Systems

Testing system which uses air-driven test probes; avoids the need to have a moving probe plate.

Pneumatic probes provide an alternative to the use of conventional spring contact test probes to solve some problems in test fixture design. The major features of pneumatic probing systems are:

  • The probes are held away from the test item until contact is required, which avoids damage and wear and tear on the probe tips. When the compressed air is switched on to the probe the tip moves into contact with the test pad.
  • The ability to program sequential tests using a programmer and electric valves to operate different probes at set times in the test program. An important consideration is that probes not in use are not in contact with the item under test and so cannot introduce measurement errors by adding any erroneous circuit paths.

  • Here is a complete range of probes, together with all the hoses, terminations, manifolds for air distribution, and electric switches for programming a test routine.
IMPORTANT: We can supply many different sizes and styles of pneumatic probes. If you find that you need something other than those listed under the PP4 series please contact CODA to discuss your requirement.

This is a hypothetical setup designed to show all the catalogue items in use.
Requirement. To switch on the air to the tester under program control, together with probes 1 to 7, then to operate probes 8 and 9, and 10 to 13, in two separate groups under program control. Operation. At start up operating switch 1 releases air to manifold MAN2-0 which splits the air to two paths. The first path takes the air to the left hand manifold MAN10-0 which distributes the air to probes 1 to 7 and they immediately rise to their operating position. The second path from MAN2-0 takes air to connector base CB-2 where it is held by switches 2 and 3. By program control, switch 2 is operated, releasing air to MAN2-3/1 from which it is distributed to probes 8 and 9. Under program control, switch 3 releases air to the right hand manifold MAN10-0 which distributes the air to probes 10 to 13. An auxiliary air line, required for other purposes, is fed from the top aperture of this manifold.
