Detection and Switching Probes

PS Range

Presence detection using switch probes

A switching probe is conductively connected to the barrel, spring and receptacle while the terminal is insulated from these components and is designed primarily for detecting the absence or presence of non-conductive features, where a normal contact probe can not be used.

Typical Uses

  • Test/harness connector contacts 'in-place' switch
  • UUT 'in-place' and 'start test' switch
  • Cycle counter 'actuation' switch in vacuum test fixtures
  • Presence detection of a fitted part

  • Tip: Prevent damage to the insulator on the tail by using heat sinking pliers during any soldering.

    Position detection using a potentiometer

A position detector probe uses a nonconductive, spring-return plunger to identify the position of a fitted component or moving part by outputting a precision signal from a potentiometer. This solution is ideally suited for use with microprocessor-based systems including robotics, industrial automation, test and controls and other applications such as joystick controls. Its ruggedized design and long life span allows it to be used in a volume production environment, yet its small size makes it ideal for tight spaces. Available in three stroke lengths. Other sizes available - please contact us for details.

Presence detection using an insulating shroud

Insulated head probes are used for circuit board component lead detection and testing. The insulating shroud is raised slightly higher than the metal serrated tip. During test, if the component lead or connector pin is set correctly, the electrical contact will be made. Pins absent or misaligned will cause the shroud to make contact first and fail the test.
